Magic, Wizards and The Aether
Magic in The Midlands is not too rare, but neither too frequent. Some bards or wizards will put magic to use to mostly impress others in celebrations, although wizards and bards abilities across The Midlands are limited since the aether (the force of magic) is still largely undiscovered. Some humans have never seen magic in their life, and some see it frequently and are less impressed by the "flares" and "sparks". It is unheard of among halflings, infrequent among dwarves, frequent among elves, and constant among gnomes.
The aether the fundamental force of arcane and divine magic, from which spellcasters draw their strength. The Aether is the means by which raw magic is tapped into and used by casters. The Aether is the way in which magic presents itself to beings for their use, and it flows throughout the world, touching almost every corner or existence, with exception of dead magic zones. The Aether coexists with the Dark Aether, its opposite form.
*Two flat circles and a small ball inside is the symbol of aether, a symbol that defines wizards.
Most wizards in The Midlands are relatively weak, since for many, their understanding of the aether is limited, and very few can do truly impressive things. Wizards continuously try to develop and discover the aether, they do so by practicing spells, discovering lore and deciphering ancient knowledge. There hasn't been any truly impressive or renown wizards in The Midlands except the Sainted Theodora, one of the 7 Saints in human religious hierarchy.
Many famous wizards come to Gilithas, where in a special tower designated to them by king Wynnehelm they continue to explore the aether.
